Coco Devine
“Everything influences me. Mostly I dream of what I want to be wearing, or materials I stumble across inspire me. I hand make pieces from leather, feathers, netting, fabrics and various knick-knacks collected from around the globe. I want my jewellery to be individual, exotic, eclectic, confident, big and above all fun. You can see this with arange I did last year, inspired by Tina Turner in the Mad Max film”. - Madeline HartleyIn every good story, there is always a point when the protagonist’s past experience and intuition collide, taking them from the reasonable and predictable to the unforseen and exciting. For Madeline Hartley, creator of Coco Devine, that collision happened when she briefly visited New York after her South American trip in 2001. “I totally fell in love with the place. I also happened to be there for September 11th. So after going through all that I felt an attachment to the city. I came home to move back in 2002.”
It was her flair for fashion and her need to create that bought her to New York’s ‘Fashion Institute of Technology’ to study Millinery. “I just had it in my head that I wanted to learn Millinery. I just LOVE hats. I have quite a collection!”
“I also started making jewellery just for myself whilst studying. I was working in a very popular Martini bar in the east village and I’d always be wearing my big earrings. Lots of people would comment. Then I ended up getting them into my first shop over there (in the east village). When I finally got back to Oz I thought, “I don't want to do anything else but make jewellery!””
The next step for Madeline was getting accepted into Sydney’s Paddington Markets, which enabled her to support her craft full time. Here her label Coco Devine flourished. Currently recognised by Australia’s Mercedes Fashion week, her jewellery has also been published by fashion magazines such as Oyster and Shop till you Drop.
